'Schild en Vriend' is an old Flemish battlecry, used in the rebellion of the city of Brugge against the French, May 18, 1302. Legend tells that it was used to differentiate between the French-speaking (who could not pronounce 'schild') and Flemish-speaking citizens. Nowadays, historians tell us that it was probably 'Des Gilden Vriend'.

The initial French setup. Visible are the two squads of sailors, the Mitrailleuse, the mobile garden and the HQ group consisting of the commander and a flag bearer. The natives dimly visible through the leaves were not actually there, but were just placed there for visual appeal, as they started the game in hidden positions. Also visible is the edge of Lake Walfriede and a native canoe, which during the games played was used by every side but the natives. |
