Schild & Vriend

'Schild en Vriend' is an old Flemish battlecry, used in the rebellion of the city of Brugge against the French, May 18, 1302. Legend tells that it was used to differentiate between the French-speaking (who could not pronounce 'schild') and Flemish-speaking citizens. Nowadays, historians tell us that it was probably 'Des Gilden Vriend'.

Coat of Arms of Schild & Vriend

When our club was founded, we devised a coat of arms. Nothing official, of course, just for fun, and to have a recognizable logo. The four fields in our shield are explained below.
three silver dice on a field of azure
How better to characterize a gaming club than putting dice on the shield?
a sinopel dragon on a field of sable
This represents the 'fantasy' aspect of the games, since originally, Schild & Vriend was mainly fantasy games.
a sable lion on a field of gold
This is the coat-of-arms of medieval Flanders. The current region of Flanders is the part of Belgium we live in.
a silver band afess on a field of gules
This is the coat-of-arms of Leuven, our home town.

As mentioned above, the motto Schild en Vriend is an old Flemish battlecry, used in the rebellion of the city of Brugge against the French, May 18, 1302. Legend tells that it was used to differentiate between the French-speaking (who could not pronounce 'schild') and Flemish-speaking citizens.
