Grassus in Germany II Relief of the camp
Introduction
This is the second in the series of Roman vs. German ancients scenarios. The Romans are still retreating from Germany, and are now approaching their last base camp before the Rhine, only to find it under siege from another tribe of Germans. The scenario revolves around this attack on the Roman camp and the attempts of the Roman marching column to relieve it.
The scenario was originally found on Steve Burt's webpage, which, along with some inspiring photographs and terrain discussion, also has several other scenarios. The scenario is based on a scenario in C.S. Grant's Scenarios for wargames book.
Table layout
We played this game on a 6'x4' (well, actually 2.04mx1.22m) table, from short edge to short edge. E and W are opposite short edges, N and S (naturally) opposite long edges. The camp is about 3/4 of the table length to the W, in the middle between N and S edges. In wide arc starting N of the camp is a hill line, which extends through almost half of a circle to the S edge. Closest to the E edge, about 1/3 of the table length in, are two steep wooded hills, blocking almost two thirds of the table width. The other hills are a mixture of steep wooded ones and steep and gentle bare hills.
Rules
Although we usually play Armati for these scenarios, this scenario was written for DBM, as Armati does not have any fortification rules, and I did not have time to come up with decent house rules for them. We played the scenario using DBM 2.1 rules, no weather or time of day.
